We offer two intensive days of one-to-one learning to understand and apply Ansel Adams’ Zone System to digital photography. This includes one and a half days of shooting in the beautiful countryside of the Tarn region and a half-day of printing on one of the Centre pour la photographie’s professional printers : Epson color and Piezography® black-and-white printing.
The Zone System was developed by Ansel Adams during the film photography era to control exposure and development in order to produce an optimized negative, ensuring a high-quality print.
In digital photography as well, applying the Zone System makes it possible to previsualize the final image using the ten zones—from black to white—as defined by the creator of the method. In this case, of course, image development takes place not in a chemical darkroom, but on a computer screen using appropriate software.
On the subject, in a 1983 interview for Playboy, Ansel Adams anticipated the arrival of digital photography : “…the time will come when we will be able to make a completely electronic photograph. With extremely high resolution and the tremendous control possible through electronics, the result will be fantastic. I wish I were young again.”
To begin with, using the Zone System means understanding how your equipment works and recognizing its limitations in order to achieve perfectly exposed and balanced images, thus making printing easier and more reliable.
Mastering the previsualization of the final result through the use of the ten grayscale zones opens up new technical and creative possibilities in the way participants make photographs.
This workshop is intended for photographers who already possess basic digital photography skills. It prioritizes practical shooting while also addressing theory, including the perception of the “scene” and the rendering of the “scene.”
At the end of the final half-day devoted to printing, the participant will leave with at least four A3+ prints.
The aim of the workshop is to develop an understanding of the Zone System adapted to digital photography through field training, exposure and contrast control, and the printing of photos created during the workshop.

Terms of access : examination of demands on arrival. Time of access according to each workshop dates.
The workshop is conducted on an individual basis, with instruction tailored to the participant’s personality and artistic sensitivity.
It is also possible to arrange a workshop for up to three people who already know one another.
Price : €900 per person (VAT-exempt for professionals) and €1,080 incl. VAT for non-professionals. A 30% deposit is required.
Lunches, prepared with high-quality local products, are served on-site and included in the workshop fee.
Equipment included
The workshop will be refunded in full in the event of a public health emergency declared by the government.
